Clean Up The World (CUW) Event
During the pandemic, we were also working hard with volunteers, using recycled masks, gloves and bags for safe cleaning.
In 2021, the biggest focus of the world’s biggest cleaning event was oceans. Occupying 70 percent of the planet’s surface, making ocean waters essential for the existence of thousands of species of living beings, the oceans are also great producers of oxygen, through oceanic microalgae, in addition to regulating the planet’s temperature. Therefore, the theme: Decade of Preservation of the Oceans was chosen as the annual theme (2021) of the UN – UNEP – Clean Up The World.
The nineteenth consecutive edition in Brazil of the global action Clean Up The World – Cleaning the World took place on Saturday, September 18, 2021, simultaneously in the locations covered in Brazil, and was marked by new locations; with assiduous volunteering – concerned with the environment and sustainability.
The alert took place mobilizing more than 130 countries, uniting 35 million people at the Clean Up The World 2021 event. Thousands and thousands of disposable masks and gloves were produced due to the new coronavirus pandemic; and most of them went to the oceans. For those who don’t know, the oceans have a vast ecological, economic, political and sociocultural importance. They provide food, leisure, transportation and income generation; essential for the survival of the human species. In this way, the oceans become the world’s special agenda for a decade!
We count on everyone’s help to, together, reduce the environmental impact on nature; and have a better and sustainable world.
The waste collected on the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Barra da Tijuca was reused by ARERJ (Association of Recyclers of Rio de Janeiro)
